Ajakrongk Pret — The Ghost Spirit of Khmer Beliefs

The Ajakrongk Pret is a type of spirit with a long, snake-like body and enormous size, resembling a mountain. Its head may resemble various animals such as snakes, tigers, cats, cows, or bears. These spirits are surrounded by flames day and night and cry out due to suffering and sorrow.

Habitat and Origins

These spirits live deep in forests, on rocky hills, or near the sea. The reason someone becomes such a spirit is due to past misdeeds: failing to observe religious rites, committing evil deeds, disrespecting parents or elders, or insulting virtuous people.

Example of Rebirth as Ajakrongk Pret

For instance, a person who insulted their mother by saying, "You are foolish like a bear," may be reborn as a Pret with a large snake-like body and a bear-like head. This illustrates the karmic consequences of mocking and disrespecting virtuous people.

Consequences

  • Spirits endure suffering and sorrow for past misdeeds
  • Surrounded by flames and crying out day and night
  • Face severe punishment in later lives due to karmic consequences
