🏺 Historical Background

The temple dates back to the 11th century, during the reign of King Udayadityavarman II. It reflects the Angkor Wat–style architecture and is believed to have been dedicated to Shiva. Its five towers symbolize Mount Meru — the sacred mountain in Hindu cosmology — representing divine presence on earth.

🌸 Architectural Highlights

Phnom Banan’s towers are built from sandstone and laterite blocks, with intricate carvings that have weathered centuries of rain and wind. Though partially restored, the temple still maintains its ancient charm and offers an authentic glimpse of pre-Angkorian craftsmanship. The surrounding landscape adds a majestic sense of tranquility and timeless beauty.

“Phnom Banan is not only a temple of stone but also a spiritual summit — where the soul of ancient Battambang meets the sky.”

🌿 Visiting Today

The site remains a popular destination for both local and foreign visitors. Nearby attractions include Phnom Sampeou and the Sangkae River, offering a full-day cultural experience. Early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal to capture golden-hour views over the plains.
