🏞️ Phnom Sdech Si Doch — The Dark Legend and Sacred Mountain of Kampong Chhnang 🏞️
Deep in Chol Kiri District, Kampong Chhnang Province, lies a mysterious mountain known as Phnom Sdech Si Doch — or “The King Who Ate Breast Flesh.” This site is both a historical ruin and a sacred place, surrounded by ancient legends that have been passed down through generations.
Locals recall a chilling tale about a cruel king named King Bodhisom, who once ruled in this region. According to oral tradition, the king had a hunter named Sika, who provided wild meat for royal meals. One day, unable to find game, Sika discovered the body of a woman killed by wild beasts. In fear of punishment, he took the woman’s breast flesh and cooked it as an offering for the king.
The king found the dish unusually delicious and demanded to know its source. Terrified, Sika finally confessed the truth. Instead of punishing him, the king ordered Sika to continue bringing him flesh from the breasts of women in the nearby villages. Many women were killed until the people rose in anger and plotted revenge.
⚔️ The Fall of the Cruel King
The legend tells that royal officials secretly informed the King of Angkor about the cruel acts of King Bodhisom. A special ceremony was arranged to lure the wicked king to his death — a trap that caused him to fall into a deep pit, where he was crushed under heavy stones. Since then, locals have called the site Phnom Sdech Si Doch instead of “Phnom Sdech Soi Doch,” as a mark of contempt for the king’s inhumanity.
“Phnom Sdech Si Doch stands as a haunting reminder of a king’s cruelty — and the people’s justice that ended his reign.”
🙏 From Dark Legend to Sacred Destination
Today, the mountain is home to an ancient brick temple and two sacred caves. Thanks to Elder Hun Bou, an 83-year-old villager, over 500 stone steps have been built to help pilgrims and visitors climb to the top. What was once feared for its legend is now cherished as a place of spiritual reflection and heritage tourism.
