Khmer Temples in Thailand

🏛️ Khmer Temples in Thailand — A Shared Heritage

These three temples, built during the Khmer Empire from the 10th to 12th centuries, represent remarkable achievements of ancient Khmer architecture. Today, two of these temples are located within the borders of modern Thailand — Phnom Rung and Phimai.

Both temples were constructed during the Angkor period and served as important religious and cultural centers, directly connected to the Angkor heartland in present-day Cambodia. Yet, many people in Thailand may not be fully aware of their Khmer origins, mainly due to national history curricula that highlight different narratives.

🏛️ 1️⃣ Phnom Rung Temple

Located on an extinct volcano, Phnom Rung is one of the most beautifully restored Khmer temples outside Cambodia. Its architectural layout, Sanskrit inscriptions, and Angkor-style motifs confirm its origins as a vital religious site tied to the Khmer royal network.

🏛️ 2️⃣ Phimai Temple

Phimai, located in Nakhon Ratchasima, was one of the largest Khmer temples and formed part of the same cultural and architectural tradition as Angkor Wat. Its orientation toward Angkor, identical decorative style, and inscriptions highlight its deep connection to Khmer civilization.

📚 Why Many Don’t Know They Are Khmer Temples

Differences in educational curricula across countries often create different interpretations of history. In Thailand, schoolbooks highlight local narratives, while in Cambodia these temples are recognized as part of the broader Khmer Empire. This leads to differing public awareness — though the historical, architectural and epigraphic evidence is clear.

🌏 Shared Heritage of Southeast Asia

Regardless of modern borders, Phnom Rung and Phimai are part of the shared cultural legacy of Southeast Asia. Their design, symbolism, and inscriptions reflect the artistry of the Khmer Empire — making them sites worthy of respect, preservation, and appreciation by all cultures today.
