⛵ Sail Away on a Catamaran — Amidst the Breathtaking Views of Phuket
With the ocean breeze embracing your face and the scent of the sea guiding your senses, sailing the Andaman Sea aboard a luxurious catamaran becomes a moment where time slows down. The air whispers quietly — “Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let the ocean carry your worries away.”
On the Blue Moon Catamaran surrounded by pristine turquoise waters of eastern Phuket, this was precisely how I felt. Escaping the hustle of Singapore for a February weekend, we set sail across clusters of limestone islands, never realizing that this serene escape would be our final trip before the world went into lockdown. What emerged was a peaceful, heartfelt journey that bonded our family against a cinematic backdrop of endless blues melting into a warm orange sunset.
🌊 Sailing from Ao Po Grand Marina to Phang Nga Bay
Early morning, we boarded the luxurious 52-foot Blue Moon at Ao Po Grand Marina on the eastern fringe of Phuket. With five ensuite cabins, a panoramic salon, ample lounge areas and two large bow trampolines doubling as hammocks, the yacht felt less like a vessel and more like a floating sea-view apartment. The Andaman adventure had begun.
Phang Nga Bay is world-renowned for its dramatic limestone cliffs rising out of emerald-green waters. A protected marine national park, the bay offers secret beaches, labyrinth-style caves, and quiet lagoons — many of which remain untouched and hidden from busy tourist routes.
🏝️ Leisure Cruising Among Island Scapes
With no fixed schedule and no itineraries to chase, we asked Captain Jim to guide us along the surrounding islands at a relaxed pace — one of the true luxuries of sailing your own private yacht. He knew exactly what we sought and steered us toward the hidden caves and lagoons of Koh Panak, promising a close encounter with the towering limestone formations.
🕳️ Secret Lagoons and Sea Caves — The Hidden ‘Hong’
Entering the sea caves demanded courage. Led by Captain Jim, we navigated narrow, dark pathways beneath the limestone cliffs, stepping carefully over ancient stalagmites while listening to droplets echoing from the cave ceiling — subtle reminders of the incoming tide that would eventually close the entrance.
Minutes later, we emerged into a hidden lagoon, a quiet ‘hong’ — a sanctuary concealed from the outside world. Towering cliffs formed a circular wall around us, sunlight pouring in through an opening above. A few mangrove trees and chirping birds hinted at life in this untouched world. To the imagination, this could easily have been a pirate’s treasure hideout centuries ago.
Realizing that the rising tide would soon seal off the pathway, we hurriedly made our way back — just in time to see the water rise over half a meter and ‘lock’ the cave from the outside world once again.
✨ Final Reflections
There are few travel experiences as serene and intimate as sailing Phuket’s islands aboard a private yacht. The luxury lies not only in the vessel, but in the time shared with loved ones, the hidden wonders discovered, and the memories created before the world changed forever.
