The Ghost Gate Of Angkor Thom 👻🏛️

The Ghost Gate, also known as the Gate of the Dead, is an important eastern gate and one of the five main gates of Angkor Thom, built in the late 12th century. Historically, this gate served as a passage for funeral processions carrying the dead from inside the city to cremation grounds or to be released into the nearby river.

Location And Historical Background

The Ghost Gate is located east of the Bayon Temple, along the defensive walls of Angkor Thom. It was constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman VII in the Angkorian period, when Angkor Thom served as the grand capital of the Khmer Empire.

Why It Is Called The “Ghost Gate”

In ancient times, this gate was used as the exit route for funeral processions. The bodies of the deceased from within the city were carried through this gate to cremation sites or released into nearby waters. Because of this funerary function, local people later referred to it as the “Ghost Gate” or the “Gate of Death.”

Art And Architecture

Like the other gates of Angkor Thom, the Ghost Gate follows the Bayon architectural style. The gate tower is crowned with four serene faces believed to represent the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, symbolizing compassion and protection over the city.

On both sides of the entrance are sculptures of the three-headed elephant known as Airavata, a sacred mythical creature in Hindu tradition. Archaeologists also discovered sculptures of deities, including a five-headed form of Shiva, believed to have served as spiritual guardians of the city.

A Place Of Quiet Reflection

Despite its eerie name, the Ghost Gate today is a peaceful and atmospheric place. Surrounded by trees and a nearby stream, it offers visitors a calm environment and a glimpse into the spiritual and historical life of the Angkorian civilization.

The gate is sometimes also referred to as a war gate or ceremonial exit, highlighting its importance as both a defensive structure and a symbolic passage within the city.
