The people of Funan originally lived in tribal communities. At the beginning of the Common Era, because of economic growth, increasing production, and population expansion, Funan developed into an organized state ruled by Queen Liu Ye.

Ancient Funan people were known as skilled maritime travelers. They used gold, silver, bronze, and lead as forms of currency and participated in regional trade networks.

Chinese records described Funan people as having dark skin and curly hair. These descriptions reflected differences in appearance compared with Chinese society at that time.

Historical scholars have debated the origins of Funan. Some proposed Indian influence, while others connected it with Mon, Khmer-Mon, or Malay groups. In reality, many ethnic groups lived in Funan, creating a diverse civilization.

Daily Life And Settlements

According to Chinese records, many Funan people wore simple clothing. Common people wore cotton garments and walked barefoot, while nobles and officials wore decorated clothing and shoes.

Homes were built above the ground using wood from forests and thatched roofs. Villages often contained around 50 to 60 houses with shared water ponds for the community.

A Society With Strong Female Influence

Funan society is often described by historians as having strong female influence. The story of Queen Liu Ye fighting against Hun Tian is considered an example of the important role of women in leadership.

Marriage traditions and social customs also reflected the important position of women, with some records mentioning women taking active roles in choosing partners.

Funeral Customs And Beliefs

Funan people practiced different funeral traditions, including:

1. Leaving the body in rivers
2. Cremation by fire
3. Burial in the ground
4. Leaving the body in forests for animals

After cremation, remaining ashes could be placed in containers and released into rivers. According to social status, kings used gold containers, officials used silver containers, and ordinary people used clay containers.

Ancient Justice And Beliefs

Funan society used spiritual methods to seek truth. When someone was accused, trials could involve rituals believed to reveal guilt or innocence.
