Khmer history is often remembered through its great kings, yet royal women also played significant roles in shaping the kingdom. While few women formally ruled as monarchs, historical records and inscriptions show that queens and princesses exercised political, religious, and cultural influence throughout different periods of Cambodian history.

According to Chinese historical records describing the ancient Kingdom of Funan, a female leader named Liuye is mentioned before the arrival of Kaundinya. In later Khmer historical tradition, Liuye is commonly associated with Queen Soma. However, many historians consider this account to be a historical tradition rather than a fully verified historical fact.

One of the best-known examples is Queen Indradevi, the learned queen of King Jayavarman VII. Historical inscriptions describe her as an educator, scholar, and supporter of Mahayana Buddhism.

During periods of political uncertainty or succession disputes, royal women could serve as influential advisors, guardians of royal legitimacy, or key figures in maintaining stability within the court. Their contributions were often essential, even if they were not crowned as reigning monarchs.
